SMEs are the lifelines of our economy.

American Green believes small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the driving force behind our economy. We also believe these businesses care deeply about how their operations affect the environment and the communities they serve.

That’s why we help companies measure Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, document methodologies, and prepare disclosure-ready inventories aligned with GHG Protocol and relevant reporting requirements.

Who are our GHG accounting services for?

Small, mid-market and enterprise companies building an emissions baseline or wanting to structure their emissions reporting

Companies preparing for customer or investor questionnaires

Private equity portfolios standardizing emissions measurement

California-reporting entities

Multinationals aligning reporting across IFRS S2 or CSRD/ESRS

Why do companies need GHG accounting now?

Domestic and international compliance

Regulations are already in effect that make GHG emissions compliance imperative. As an SME, you might be a supplier to one of the large brands and required to give out supplier information.

  • IFRS S2 is already effective for annual periods beginning on or after January 1, 2024.

  • California’s SB 253 now has a first-year reporting deadline of August 10, 2026, for Scope 1 and 2 for covered entities, with Scope 3 beginning in 2027.

  • The EU’s CSRD is live for first-wave companies while the Commission has also documented 2025 timing changes for later-wave companies.

Business opportunities

More and more, SMEs are expected to provide accurate emissions data. Why? Because their customers, investors, lenders, and procurement teams see its value and are asking for it.

Studies have shown that greenhouse gas accounting helps:

And the best way to provide what is needed is to start with a clear emissions baseline before target-setting or transition planning.

Financial access

Did you know there are many opportunities to receive financial assistance if you’re willing to make changes to your business operations?

Multiple U.S. financial institutions and specialized lenders offer credit lines, loans, and financing tailored for sustainable operations, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly projects:

  • sustainability-linked loans (interest rates tied to goals)

  • green business loans for equipment
  • specialized credit lines from Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) that prioritize environmental impact
